This week I want to discuss the overlap of Dentistry and Medicine. Most people associate dentists with filling cavities, making crowns and straightening teeth. The mouth is the gateway to the body and often medical problems are picked up by Dentist. The obvious one is Oral Cancer in smokers and drinkers but other types such as Breast Cancer spreads to the oral cavity. People with ammonia like breath often have Diabetes. Periodontal Disease has a direct link to Cardiovascular Disease in the mouth. In short, next time you go to the dentist, realize we are more than oral engineers.
