TMJ Relief

What is TMJ and TMD?

TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint which connects the mandible, which is the lower jaw, to the skull at the temporal bone. This joint has many functions including chewing. Often people clench their teeth and put stress on this joint, when they are emotionally stressed. If someone experiences some or all of the following symptoms, they should be evaluated by Dr. Sunners for Temporomandibular Disorder, also known as TMD.

Common Symptoms :
• Headaches
• Ear Pain
• Grinding Teeth
• Stiff Chewing
• Painful opening and closing of your mouth
• Popping or Clicking sounds when your mouth is opened
• In more extreme cases the jaw can become stuck in the open or shut position

What Can Be Done?

Hot/ Cold compresses with pain relievers may help in the short run. However, if you suspect that you have this problem, make a consultation appointment with Dr. Sunners. He can diagnose your possible TMJ problem and provide long-term relief. A nightguard or NTI can be made to help lessen the effects of grinding teeth at night. Ongoing teeth grinding , also called Bruxism, can cause wear on your tooth enamel. Continual wear on your enamel will in turn expose tooth Dentin, which is more prone to decay, as well as being more sensitive to hot and cold food/ drinks.

Additionally, Dr. Sunners has an Energex which can provide immediate relief from painful muscular stress, with Pulsed Radio Frequency Waves, not pain medication!

I was referred to Dr. Sunners about a year ago and he has been great. Great chair side presence. Easy to talk to and to follow along with. I’m impressed with the fact he takes time to walk through treatment details (as much as you want him to). He’s more interested in your care than your billing and that’s a great thing.
